Soothing Summer Skin: Expert Tips for Managing Itchy Bug Bites

With all the summer rain this season, many patients have asked us how to manage itchy bug bites. Here are our tips to help your skin heal from any itchy bug bite this summer.

  1. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone ointment can help stop the itch in its tracks. It can be used twice daily for up to 14 days.
  2. Over-the-counter anti-itch creams like Sarna or Dermeleeve. Place the product in the fridge for added soothing benefits.
  3. Use over-the-counter antihistamine medications like Zyrtec, Claritin, and Allegra to help stop histamine, the itching chemical that spreads throughout the body after an insect bite.
  4.  Apply hydrocolloid pimple patches to the bites to reduce the swelling and prevent further scratching or picking of the sites.

If your bug bite causes a rash, if you develop fever, pain, or pus from the site of the bite please seek medical attention.
