Hair Loss Awareness Month: Why early treatment matters

Hair loss affects 80 million people in the United States, yet many people wait months, or even years, before seeking help. That is why August is Hair Loss Awareness Month, a time to destigmatize, educate, and encourage evaluation.

Recent dermatology research gives a clear warning: waiting more than 3.5 years after hair loss begins can significantly reduce chances of successful regrowth. When hair follicles remain inactive for long periods, they become more difficult to wake back up and respond to treatment. The earlier hair loss is diagnosed and treated, the better the opportunity to preserve and regrow hair.

Common types of hair loss

Not all hair loss has the same cause. Some can be temporary, while others are chronic. Identifying the type of hair loss is the first step toward finding the correct treatment.

Androgenetic Alopecia is the most common form of hair loss in both men and women. This form of hair loss is influenced by genetics and hormones. It typically causes a receding hairline or thinning at the crown in men and diffuse thinning of the crown in women.

Telogen Efflivium is temporary hair shedding that usually occurs 2-3 months after a big trigger such as:

  • Major weight loss
  • High fever
  • Postpartum
  • Emotional trauma

These events cause more hair follicles than usual to enter the resting (telogen) phase, leading to increased shedding.

Hair loss symptoms

Recognizing hair loss early can improve outcomes. Look out for these symptoms:

  • Receding hairline in men
  • Hair thinning all over the head, typical in female pattern hair loss
  • Loss of small patches of hair on the scalp
  • Loss of hair on the scalp and body

Hair loss causes

Hair loss can be caused by a handful of things.

  • Lifestyle factors (high acute stress, restrictive diets, harsh styling practices)
  • Hormonal changes (shifts due to pregnancy, menopause, PMOS, thyroid disorders)
  • Genetics
  • Medical treatment
  • Autoimmune diseases

When to consult a doctor

Consider consulting a doctor if you experience one or more of these symptoms.

  • Burning, itching, irritation on the scalp
  • Excessive daily shedding
  • Sudden loss of large amounts of hair
  • Loss of hair on the scalp and body
  • Bald patches appearing on the scalp

The earlier you intervene, the better your chance at visible regrowth.

Hair loss treatment

There are numerous ways to treat hair loss depending on what type you have. After an evaluation, your dermatologist may suggest one or more of the following:

Nutritional support

If nutritional deficiencies are contributing to hair loss, supplements such as Viviscal® or Xtresse® may be recommended as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP uses your body’s own platelets to stimulate hair follicles. Treatment typically consists of four initial sessions, followed by once a year maintenance treatments.

KeraLase®

KeraLase combines a laser treatment that creates microscopic channels in the scalp with a specialized growth factor serum to encourage healthier hair growth. Most patients benefit from a series of six treatments, followed by annual maintenance.

Prescription & topical treatments

Topical medications such as minoxidil and medicated shampoos containing ketoconazole may help stimulate hair growth and reduce scalp inflammation when appropriate.

Kerafactor® products

Professional-grade Kerafactor hair care products are available through the Tareen Dermatology online store and may complement in-office treatments.

Blood work

Laboratory testing may be recommended to identify underlying contributors such as iron deficiency, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid disease, or autoimmune conditions.

Low-Level Light Therapy

Low-level light therapy (LLLT) increases circulation and supports hair follicle activity. Dr. Tareen recommends the REVIAN® Red Hair Growth System, a wearable LED device designed to stimulate nitric oxide production, improve blood flow, and reduce inflammation associated with hair loss.

Don’t wait to seek treatment

Hair loss rarely improves on its own, and delaying treatment may reduce your chances of successful regrowth. The sooner the cause is identified, the sooner an effective treatment plan can begin.

If you’ve noticed increased shedding, thinning, or bald patches, our board-certified dermatologists at Tareen Dermatology can help determine the cause and recommend personalized treatment options.
