Tips for Managing Side Effects of Accutane
Accutane® (isotretinoin) is a high dose of vitamin A used to treat acne cysts and nodules. It is a very effective medication, and since it is an oral medication, it is absorbed systemically. This medication’s number one side effect is dryness, which affects many areas of the body. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to be helpful in randomized control trials in those taking isotretinoin to aid in overall dryness. This can be through dietary consumption of fish, seeds, nuts, and eggs. Otherwise, 1,000mg of omega-3 has been shown to be helpful in patients taking isotretinoin. We recommend Vaseline®, Aquaphor®, or Dr. Dan’s Cortibalm for dry lips. Eye drops like Refresh® or Systane® are useful for eye dryness. Nasal saline mist is helpful in those who experience dry nose or nose bleeds.
Some patients notice their acne gets worse before it gets better on isotretinoin. Studies show that second-generation oral antihistamines like Zyrtec®, Allegra®, or Claritin® reduce the risk of purging from 30% to 5%. Talk with your provider if this option is the right fit for you.
While isotretinoin is not the right medication for everyone, it does not need to be difficult to take. Working with your medical provider to incorporate tips and tricks into your skin care regimen is a great way to ensure minimal side effects while on a course of isotretinoin.
