What is Milia?

What is Milia?

Milia are tiny micro cysts made up of deposits from the top layer of the skin called stratum corneum. Patients often describe them as hard white heads that they cannot pop. They appear commonly on the face, especially around the eye area. These deposits do NOT come from a clogged pore. People with a history of sun damage and rosacea are more likely to develop milia. Milia are also more likely to develop after a rash, skin injury, or allergic reaction.

Using retinol-based products can help to loosen the dead skin that builds up and ultimately forms the milia on the skin. Getting regular facials and exfoliative treatments like chemical peels is also helpful. Here at Tareen Dermatology, we offer chemical peels and hydrafacials. Both can be instrumental in treating milia and preventing them.

Here are our top tips to prevent Milia:

  1. Avoiding thick ointments in milia-prone areas
  2. Gentle cleaning of the skin with exfoliation
  3. Use retinol-based products to turn over skin cells
  4. Considering adding chemical peels or hydrafacials to your skin routine at Tareen Dermatology
