Premature Grey Hair: The Impact of Deficiencies, Stress, and Topicals

Did you know that you can change the color of your hair? Premature hair greying is defined as the development of grey hair that occurs in the 20s or early 30s. While there is a genetic component to greying hair, the family onset of greying hair can differ due to modifiable risk factors. This means that you may be able to identify the cause and reverse greying hair by considering the following:

  1. Vitamin deficiencies such as low iron, copper, b12, and hypothyroidism can lead to premature greying.
  2. Compelling evidence suggests that prolonged intense stress can cause premature greying.
  3. Oxidative stress from the sun and tanning damages the pigment cells of the hair root causing hairs to become grey.

Some topicals on the market also contain antioxidants that may protect the pigment cells of the hair, such as alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone agonists. These topical treatments are most effective when you have less than 30% grey hair.
