How to Prepare for a Skin Check

All skin surfaces are examined during skin checks from the top of the head to the toes. Skin is examined for evidence of pre-cancerous and cancerous spots for both nonmelanoma (skin cancers caused by the sun) and melanoma skin cancers (evolving moles). Biopsies and treatments can be completed on the same day. To prepare for your appointment, consider the following:

  1. Remove nail polish – we examine the nail beds for any unusual pigment.
  2. Don’t wear any makeup – this allows us to examine all skin qualities; facial skin typically receives a lot of sun.
  3. Scrub away any self-tanner – this allows us to examine the skin best, although a self-tan or spray is not a reason to cancel your appointment. We can still examine you.
  4. Don’t apply lotion – this allows us to examine the skin’s texture, which helps us identify and treat the skin.
  5. Write down a list of concerns – this way, we can ensure all your questions are answered before you leave your appointment.
  6. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that makes it easy to change into the gown for the appointment.
